Dear Mom and Dad:

The cruise has just started, and I wanted to take a few minutes to let you know about my arrangements on board. I’ve got one of their nice staterooms with Andrea – they’re a bit cramped but they have nice flat screens and work desks, about a third smaller than a Motel 6 room. Still, quite nice and it’s going to be fun figuring out how they hid all the amenities in unused spaces of the walls and cabinets.

I’ve arranged for a little bit of work on this trip, by the way. There are kids’ clubs, and one of them likes to give people a chance to try out various arts and crafts, so I’ll be doing my usual two-day ‘introduction to woodworking’ bit. I’ve brought a bunch of planes, sandpaper, pre-cut bits of wood and so on, and the crew has offered to pay me if I do the workshop. Twice, if it is popular. This means there’ll be a check coming your way; if it arrives while I’m still gone, please keep hold of it for me. It’ll help pay for a supply of hardwoods I’ve been looking forward to getting.

Anyway, I’m going to head out to explore a bit. I’m not sure what all is available to do on the trip if you’re not into shows or food, but I’m sure it’ll be fun. There are lots of interesting people; Andrea’s already gone off to one of the bars to chat up some dads. But I’m looking forward to exploring the keys and islands, more than anything else. I’m sure I’ll run into some plants and animals that I’ve never seen. I just hope my High School French is up to any of the local Creoles that might not speak English!

Take care, and I’ll see you in 8 days. I love you both, and I’ll write more, later!
