Rise of the Dead

Mom & Dad:
I just wanted to let you know we succeeded in getting that book Dr. Rivet needed, with the help of a batch of military that seemed to really want to do the right thing, rather than like that horror-movie town of VOPA’s. I’m kind of glad we’ve parted ways, since they would follow orders to drag us to a VOPA camp if they had a chance, but I can understand it’s been a difficult situation for them. We’re now on our way to Colorado, where I hope we’ll be able to see each other again.
The past few weeks run by in a blur, but we’ve been recuperating and trading for supplies at a barter town. It was created by a relative of Grimm Walker’s. I don’t like (at all!) that they support slavery, although at present it’s more like work camps for the poor. Again, a difficult situation because I can see the unwillingness to support the ‘worthless’, but damnit, these are people and they have value. Still, it appears as if you earn your way out of it over time. It’s just, like VOPA, /so/ open to abuse. Unlike that awful camp, they haven’t gone quite that far over the line. I think Mr. Walker may even keep it sane-ish, although I find staying here to be scarier than if I was a defense worker vacationing in old Russia or China. But when he’s gone? Or when he delegates too much power? I expect it to go south, quickly. Kind of like what was happening before all this mess, when people started voting on what their heroes told them, and didn’t take any responsibility for their own votes.
Anyway, our main goal while here is to get some rare supplies to give ourselves a better chance to get to Colorado. Tools, supplies for the cars, and so on. It’s hard work, but I think we’re making progress. I hope we’ll be able to leave this place as a safer refuge from those zombies.
Well, that’s about all I can say at this point. I’ve just been working hard, and we haven’t done much of interest besides a little birthday celebration for that cheerleader girl we’ve been traveling with. She’s been having a hard time, so it was good to give her something to enjoy.
